Released in 2020 by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers is the game that showed up with a huge budget, a stacked superhero roster, and the confidence of something that absolutely believed it was going to dominate for years. Spoiler: it did not. What you do get here is a flashy, story-driven action game wrapped in live-service ambitions that aged about as well as you’d expect.

The campaign is the highlight, following Kamala Khan as she drags a very tired Avengers lineup back together after everything goes sideways. Combat is punchy and satisfying at first, with each hero feeling distinct enough to sell the fantasy. Then the repetition kicks in. Hard. Missions blur together, enemies recycle constantly, and the game slowly reveals that variety was never the plan.

Visually, it looks great on PlayStation 4. Character models are detailed, environments are polished, and the Steelbook Edition at least gives you something nice to look at on the shelf even when the game tests your patience. The presentation screams “premium,” even when the design decisions say otherwise.

Marvel’s Avengers supports single-player and online play, though much of the live-service content that once justified the grind is no longer relevant. What remains is a solid story campaign buried inside a game that wanted to be way more than it needed to be.
