Description
Beyond: Two Souls (PlayStation 3, 2013) , Very Good
Released in 2013 by Quantic Dream, Beyond: Two Souls is a cinematic adventure that really wants you to feel things, whether you asked for that or not. You follow Jodie Holmes across decades of her life, bouncing through time, trauma, government experiments, and supernatural nonsense with an invisible ghost buddy who absolutely refuses to mind his own business.
This is not a traditional game and it makes no effort to pretend otherwise. Gameplay leans heavily on story choices, quick-time events, and light puzzle-solving, with most of the experience focused on watching scenes play out and deciding how Jodie reacts to them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it’s melodramatic as hell, and sometimes it feels like an interactive movie that forgot you were holding a controller.
Visually, it was impressive for the PlayStation 3 at the time and still holds up thanks to strong performances and motion capture. The nonlinear storytelling jumps around Jodie’s life out of order, which can either feel thoughtful and emotional or mildly confusing depending on how invested you are in the narrative.
Beyond: Two Souls is a single-player experience with no online features involved. This is a story-first game designed for players who care more about characters and choices than mechanical depth. If you want something narrative-heavy, dramatic, and very much its own thing, you can buy retro games on Retro Games eXchange and grab this knowing it’s closer to a playable drama than a traditional action game.
- Story-driven experience focused on choice and narrative over combat.
- Nonlinear storytelling that jumps across different stages of the protagonist’s life.
- Supernatural mechanics built around an ever-present spirit companion.
- Strong performances and motion capture for the PS3 era.
- A cinematic game that leans fully into drama instead of traditional gameplay.
